What is operational health management?

Stress is the main reason for the increasing amount of sick leave taken by employees today. However, it's easy for companies to prevent this - with proper operational health management. This concept is all about finding ways to make teams healthy, fit and resilient, and creates new approaches and programs to reach this goal. A proper implementation benefits the body and the mind as well as the general atmosphere within the company, the performance and the loyalty.
Sounds great, doesn't it? But how does it work?

Where to start?

The goals of operational health management are simple: Employees should be healthier thanks to preventive measures and reintegration after long sickness should be easier. Here are some ideas:

To nuture your team's health:

  • Prevent stress:
Help your employees to relax - with a yoga group, meditation classes or just regular walks in the park. Don't worry - there is something for every location and budget.

Further ideas

But relaxation alone isn't the key. There are many more things you can support:

  • Loosen those muscles:
Unpleasant and painful tension can be prevented and / or relieved with massages, regular stretching sessions and ergonomic furniture.

  • Support a good diet:
Food is also a part of good health management. Offer your team fresh fruit, have a cooking session, enjoy breakfast together or introduce a lunch program like Smunch.

By the way:

Many of these health measures are partly or entirely tax-free, as they fall under the category of fringe benefits. It pays off to do some research - for example on our pages!

What happens after the sickness?

Diving right back in after a long sick leave can be quite overwhelming. Hence it's even more important to support your employees as they return to the company.

For easy reintegration:

  • Slow beginning:
Use the so-called Hamburg model: Start by welcoming your team member back part-time, then slowly increase the workload

Once your team member is back

  • Offer support:
Provide support for your team member, for example from a trainee or intern who can take over small tasks

  • Smooth handover:
Ensure that the absent colleague is still copied into all correspondence and that a complete handover takes place - this will allow him to be back in the game easily.
